Low-code platforms allow business personnel and junior developers to make usable AI applications within a few days – but there are many platforms and widely varying capability boundaries. Choosing the wrong platform is the most common waste. This article systematically explainsthe complete path for low-code development of AI applications: how to choose a platform, 5-step development method, data and permission design, common pitfalls, and when to turn to customized development.

1. What low code can and cannot do

The essence of the low-code AI platform is “visual orchestration + preset AI components + connector ecology”, which is suitable for rapid productization of scenarios with clear processes, structured data, and targeting internal efficiency:

  • Typical and feasible: Intelligent customer service and knowledge base Q&A, sales lead follow-up assistant, contract/resume preliminary screening, report Q&A, marketing copy generation, internal system Q&A robot.
  • Needs Assessment: Scenarios where multiple internal systems need to be connected, there are complex permission models, and a large number of calls – it depends on the platform’s API/Webhook and billing methods.
  • Not suitable: For scenarios with millisecond-level performance requirements, core transaction links, data strictly not leaving the domain and the platform does not support privatization, and scenarios that require unique algorithm logic, customized development should be adopted (refer to “AI Application Development Practical Guide“).

2. How to choose mainstream platforms

Platform Features Suitable
Coze Dialogue flow/workflow, rich plug-in ecosystem, domestic multi-channel release Customer service, marketing robot, quick verification of ideas
Dify Open source can be privatized, with strong RAG and tool orchestration capabilities A team with technical personnel and requiring data autonomy
Alibaba Cloud Bailian Smooth integration with Alibaba Cloud ecosystem and enterprise systems Enterprises already on Alibaba Cloud
Tencent Cloud/WeChat platform Closely connected with WeChat ecosystem, Tencent Conference, etc. Mainly public accounts/enterprise and micro scenarios
Microsoft Copilot Studio In-depth integration with Microsoft 365/Dynamics Foreign companies and Office ecosystem users

The selection decision is based on four questions: ① Which channels do you want to publish to? ② Can data be uploaded to the public cloud? ③ Which internal systems need to be connected, and are there any ready-made connectors? ④ What is the total cost based on the estimated call volume? It is recommended to use the same small scene to do POC for half a day on each of the two platforms before making a decision.

3. 5-step method for low-code development of AI applications

Step 1: Scenario definition and process breakdown (0.5–1 day)

Write clearly in one sentence “who inputs what and gets what under what circumstances”. Then draw the business process into a node diagram: triggering method (dialogue/form/timing/webhook), AI capabilities to be called (question and answer/extraction/generation/classification), systems to be read and written, and manual approval nodes. If the process is not clearly drawn, it means that the scene is not yet ready for development.

Step 2: Prepare data and knowledge base (1–2 days)

The effectiveness of RAG applications depends on data quality: document deduplication, segmentation by topic, prioritizing tables over long articles, and marking the applicable scope of each piece of knowledge; when it comes to databases, prepare read-only views first instead of directly connecting to the production database. For specific practices in customer service scenarios, please refer to “Complete Tutorial on Building a Smart Customer Service System without Code“.

Step 3: Visual orchestration application (2–4 days)

  • Prompt Word Node: Write down roles, tasks, output format (requires JSON/table output to facilitate subsequent node analysis), and rejection rules.
  • Knowledge retrieval node: Set the number of Top-K items and the similarity threshold. The threshold should be strict rather than loose to reduce interference from irrelevant content.
  • Logic and tool nodes: conditional branches, variable transfers, API/Webhook calls; all external calls set timeout and fail-safe branches.
  • Human-computer collaboration node: Low-confidence or sensitive operations are transferred to manual approval, and the write operation is performed after human confirmation.

Step 4: Testing and Evaluation (1–2 days)

Create 30-50 test cases, covering: standard answer categories, boundary questions, out-of-category questions, abnormal input (garbled characters, overlong, multi-language). Focus on verifying three things: the rate of incorrect answers, the rate of rejection of sensitive questions, and the performance when tool calls fail. Every time the prompt word or parameter is changed, all use cases will be returned.

Step 5: Release, Monitor and Iterate

Give it to a small range of users first; turn on the complete conversation log (pay attention to desensitization); review three types of data every week: high-frequency questions (discover new needs), low satisfaction/error correction records (discover knowledge gaps), and call costs (find abuse or lengthy prompt words). Iterate prompt words and knowledge base on a monthly basis.

4. Data, permissions and cost design

  • Permissions: If there is a need for departmental data isolation, row-level permissions should be set at the knowledge base or data connector layer. Do not expect to use the prompt word “Don’t say what you shouldn’t see” to constrain the model.
  • Cost: The cost of AI nodes is strongly related to the input length. Only the retrieved relevant fragments are passed to the model instead of the entire knowledge base; small models are used for simple classification tasks, and flagship models are used for complex generation.
  • Audit: For applications involving external output or write operations, keep the full-link log of “input – search basis – model output – manual confirmation”.

5. The 6 easiest pitfalls to step into

  1. Throw all documents into one knowledge base – mixed topics lead to mixed search results, split by business domain.
  2. There is no rejection policy – the model hard-codes answers to super-category questions, and must be configured with “If there is no basis, transfer to manual/Response cannot be answered”.
  3. Ignore the prompt word version management – it is normal to be unable to roll back after modifications are made, and key nodes save versions and change instructions.
  4. Directly connected to the production database – first use read-only views and masked data.
  5. Use the dialogue entrance to carry all needs – forms, buttons, and shortcut options can solve the problem, and don’t let users type.
  6. No one operates after going online – AI applications require continuous knowledge base and evaluation maintenance, and one-time delivery will inevitably degrade.

6. When should we shift from low-code to custom development?

If any of the following signals appear, it means that the low-code platform is beginning to limit the business: the monthly call cost has exceeded the amortization of a customized system; the required system connector platform does not support it and cannot be compensated with Webhooks; data compliance requires privatization but the platform does not support it; the process complexity exceeds the maintainable range of visual orchestration (no one can understand the node diagram). At this time, the verified process and evaluation set accumulated in the low-code stage can be directly handed over to the customization team, so that the initial investment will not be wasted. The overall decision-making path can be found in “Complete Guide to Enterprise AI Application Development: From Strategy to Implementation“.

FAQ

Are low-code and no-code the same thing?

Close but different: No code relies entirely on configuration, suitable for business personnel to build standard scenarios; low code allows a small amount of code or script extensions (custom API, simple functions), and can handle more complex logic. The boundaries between the two are merging, and most AI platforms have both capabilities.

Do the business personnel do it themselves, or let the IT department do it?

It is recommended that business personnel be responsible for scenario definition, knowledge collection and test cases, and IT is responsible for system connection, permissions and online review. The most successful low-code model is the collaboration of “citizen developers + IT governance”, rather than being done by any one party.

Can AI applications made with low code be put into production?

Yes, a large number of companies’ internal assistants, customer service and marketing applications are already running in production environments. The premise is to do a good job in test set regression, permission isolation, log auditing and grayscale release, instead of opening it to all employees after building the demo.

Is it safe to put data on a low-code platform?

Depends on platform and deployment method. Public cloud SaaS needs to review its data processing protocol (whether it is used for training and how long it will be retained); sensitive data can be selected on an open source platform that supports privatized deployment, or can be desensitized before accessing.

Will migrating from low-code to custom development involve reinventing the wheel?

No. The verified business processes, knowledge base structures, prompt word templates and evaluation use cases in the low-code stage are all direct inputs for custom development, and migration usually only takes 2-4 weeks for the docking period.

It is recommended to first use a high-frequency small scenario to complete the complete closed loop of “verification-online-operation” on the platform, and then decide to expand the scope. When the scenario enters the stage of privatization and deep integration, Juzhao Data can undertake smooth upgrades from low-code verification to customized systems.
